The project resulted from our collaboration with the Client on a previous project. The project aim was to convert an existing two storey house, which had formerly been a bed and breakfast, into a fully wheelchair accessible home.

The ground floor of the house has been reconfigured and extended to form an open plan living space, with enlarged openings onto the rear garden. A new lift provides step free access to the first floor, which has also been opened up to create a more open plan layout. The first floor is planned around a glazed gallery built into the existing roof.

Exterior walls have been upgraded with insulated plasterboard internally and insulated render externally. The roof was insulated at ceiling level. All windows and doors have been upgraded with higher performance timber framed replacements. The house is heated via air source heat pumps and is mechanically ventilated with heat recovery (MVHR).

The external material palette of neutral white render, rosemary tile, and oak complements the existing house form. Expressed oak frames surround each window opening. Vertical oak fins form the first floor glazed gallery, as well as glazing to the main living space on the ground floor. These are complemented by vertically divided oak framed windows.

Oak is used extensively internally for stair guarding, shelving, and other bespoke joinery. These solid oak finishes are paired with polished concrete or herringbone timber flooring, while each bathroom has an individual palette of fittings, tile and grout, or Moroccan plaster.
