Ings Cottage.

We were approached to design an extension to a farmhouse in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The dwelling is set in large gardens with long views across the Wheldrake Ings.

The existing farmhouse lacked open-plan living space and had limited views and connection with the garden and landscape beyond. The client wanted a contemporary open plan kitchen and dining room that opened out to the gardens, and large utility and boot room. It was important that the extension would contrast with the host house, whilst being contextual and referencing the local vernacular. With the best views being to the south and west, overheating needed to be factored into the design.

The material palette was selected to reference the local, rural vernacular and compliment the host dwelling. A locally made, red multi brick in a linear, Roman format complements the existing brickwork, rusted cor-ten steel cladding and Shou Sugi Ban blackened timber reference local agricultural structures. The extension is delineated from the existing farmhouse through contemporary detailing.

The ground floor plan was arranged around the best views with floor to ceiling, sliding glazing opening out onto the landscape. To mitigate unwanted solar gains the glazing was set into deep reveals, with overhanging eaves and vertical fins. A small first floor extension provides a generous ensuite and dressing room to the master bedroom with long views across the landscape.
